Interesting- are you familiar with “Cathy”?
Cathy the comic strip?
Jesse - reading your strip has me interested in reading more about the source material you used while researching the comic. Can you make any recommendations? Pardon my ignorance, but do these characters (Mithras for example) exist in previous works, or are they all creations of your own?
Thanks
Yes?
I am familiar with Cathy although I’ve never been able to read a whole strip. I usually get about one panel in and give up.
EDIT - fuck. My comics are a lot like Cathy.
It’s funny how this comic has a running comments section. I realize a lot of webcomics have that but for some reason this one having it too is really weird and awesome. It makes me want to ask a bunch of questions each week.
What inspires you? why?
Where will the second mining operation take place? why?
Which character do you most relate to? why?
Ha ha. Please respond to these questions as soon as possible.
to Yuri: I plan posting a list of my source material at some point in the future, but the reading is ongoing so I’m not sure when I’ll do that. To answer your question specifically about Mithras, he is remembered today as an ancient Zoroastrian sun god. I’ve never used him in a comic before.
to Dash - yeah it was a bit of an issue deciding whether to have a comments section or not. It’s very interesting how this particular one is taking shape, but I think the open dialog between reader and author makes the site feel more alive. Unfortunately I can’t give away any plot secrets regarding mining operations etc… and the other answers to your questions are top secret too.
My question is twofold, and I think I know the answer. First- why did Sawyer choose the name Lafleur? and second, my anti-spam word is rundgren. I think that is a prank of some kind.
Keep it coming. Forming is a highlight of the week. Do you think perhaps you’re providing too much exposition, too fast? That’s not my opinion, I’m just chatting. Although it is my opinion that you are providing more than a casual amount of exposition in a short period of “time”. Also, the second part of my question is: if this story takes place within Earth’s non-fictional prehistoric time-frame, would it be possible for you to express a plot twist that would prevent me from ever being born? AAACK!
Yeah. Now my anti-spam word is cardiacs. Aren’t you clever.
I can’t really get into them.
One last question- I read on an un-affiliated blog that you use a Chapman stick to draw all your comics. Is that true? Another question- I assumed that, based on a panel last week, the cloaks the clones are using render them completely invisible to characters within their universe although you are depicting them using the idiom of the predator movies, i.e. semi-visible to movie-goers or in this case constipated internet users. However, this week it appears that the prelapsarians are comically aware of the clones. Are they sensitive to energy fields or other parts of the spectrum?
I hope you didn’t think I meant the American Cathy?
To John Walsh:
1. The choice of the name Jim Lafleur seems to be purely random and of no importance to the unraveling of the Lost mystery.
2. My friend Mike picks out the anti-spam words, but he seems to be choosing ones that he thinks reflect my taste in music.
3. Yes I am giving hard thought to the issue of pacing a weekly comic correctly.
4. I cannot answer any questions about future episodes however.
5. The Cardiacs are the shit, and I’ll upload you my best of mix.
6. I was in a room where a Chapman stick was being played once (or twice).
7. Can’t answer details about the alien cloaking question. Hopefully these things will reveal themselves.
To Frank:
I wasn’t aware of another Cathy. The American Cathy is the only one I am familiar with.
Uhhhhh… I love how you are turning all the bullshit I’ve been reading for years into a palatable fun read, that captures my imagination as much as the books I’ve read have. Plus there’s awesomely colored drawins.
Post Scriptum:
Even though I recognize the characters and the things situations fairly well, and I think I might have an idea as to where it’s going, I’m still dying to see where you’re taking it and how.
You’re doin some badass storytelling sir.
WTF? Toto?
Africa?
relevant?
I could totally connect it.
Oh, no. ACK! Hahahahaha. I meant the Norwegian comics strip Cathy. It is about a young girl Cathy Glunt, who takes items from her house and leaves them by the side of the lake near her, and for exchange some elves who live under the lake leave some treasure? But her mother becomes suspicious that she is having some intercourse with robbers in the area. But really, she and the elves must work together to stop the robbers. It has been developing for some years. Maybe you can have seen this as a child and will now remember? Hahaha, I guess probably not!
Forming has restored my faith in web comics and made it possible for me to love again. I can’t wait for the next installment.
this shit is hoppin
Perhaps this has been asked and answered already but I’m curious to know what you use to do your coloring. Is it just water colors? What happens first, coloring or inking?
Oh man, that’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever read!!!
(Actually, I think he uses a MIDI violin hooked up to MS Paint to color the strips, but the outlines are all done by hand. I’m pretty sure the text comes from a Yahoo Babel Fish translation of a rare Portugese novel.)
I use guache paint. Pencil first, paint second, ink last. Never used guache before this comic, but thought I’d take a chance with it. I really enjoy it. It has similar quality to water color, but you can really lay it on thick if you want.
Yes! My anti-spam word is “lynne”

I would have made a comic like this years ago but I can’t draw hands.
“*Non*-fictional” time frame? Isn’t this the Garden of Eden with aliens?
I have no idea at this point, what I’ve said in these comments sections, so I don’t hold myself accountable!
