Television is incredibly dense, in both senses of the word. I can sit down with a Richard Ford book like The Lay of the Land and read for an hour without really making a dent, and Forming can amble on for two years without an end in sight, but if you’ve got thirty minutes of television a lot better happen now, now, now, now, now.

It’s why most shows end up looking the same. For me, Forming would work wonderfully exactly as it is while moving on a screen. The trouble is that it wouldn’t last very long. Two years suddenly becomes three episodes. So out come the plans and the structures we’re used to and a simpler form of telling. It’s complex in its intricacy, but it’s like a puzzle and the focus is on getting bits to fit, which is often the least interesting part of the process.

Oh, that comment was definitely supposed to be posted in the Adventure Time Ghost post. Sorry.
