Lol Jesse Moynihan has probably had some criticism about how he handled adventure time in a high-handed manner and changed the tone of the series. In a way I think nommo represents one aspect of Jesse Moynihan and the black guy is the personification of a different perspective on media. They can be reconciled. Perhaps I’ve changed or maybe it’s adventure time but there have been some eps that seemed wanna but then again there’s always going to be weak eps and perhaps that builds for a stronger series. Time will tell. It’s been a while since Moynihan has been updating these picture words. Black guy is almost breaking the fourth wall.

I took this as Jesse struggling with the two creative impulses in his work, high capital ‘A’ Art, and entertainment. Adventure time is always (often frustratingly) billed as kids entertainment, but because of Jesse and a bunch of other people on the show, it was elevated much higher than that creatively. I think this is his internal conflict of trying to balance the two, because on both ends of the spectrum you end up with some truly shitty art

Late reply but I just wanted to say some words of support as I perceive
this part of the narrative as being meta-critical of forming. I know you made this page a while ago but you said you’re starting up again and wanted to give you some words of encouragement! I’m the same age you were when you started
forming, and it is wildly appealing to me precisely
because it is “deep media.” It’s why I searched you
out from Adventure Time in the first place because the episodes you made
spoke to me. Then I read forming and was blown away. It’s a rare thing
for an artist to be able to truly inspire, not just entertain. You
manage to portray things I thought I felt alone in
thinking/experiencing. Many of the pages of forming give me same
feelings of transcendence I get when I read great spiritual works. When I
finally get to buy a full copy of forming, I will be hard pressed
whether to put it on my spirituality shelf or the philosophy shelf in my
bookcase, but it won’t be going on my mindless entertainment shelf.
Time and a place for everything I guess, but having a deep voice is
nothing to be self-conscious of. Spirituality has held mass appeal for
millennia, and continues to do so today. Your style is much more
appealing that you give yourself credit for here. Just wanted to say
that. Keep it up!
