I can&#8217;t remember what he said exactly, or where I saw it but it simultaneously reminded me not to be so cranky and also that he had a point that resonated with my sensibilities. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3U7KaI_NPGg\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I spent the last 1\/2 hr trying to find the scene in Turning Red I was looking for. Couldn&#8217;t find it. I should say that I actually really enjoyed Turning Red. I just had a technical thought while watching it: that I&#8217;m having over-pose burn out. I think there might be a pressure at 3D studios for animators to squeeze every micro-pose possible out of a line read or action. It creates this non-stop (fun) movement tracking for the viewer. I&#8217;m curious how we will perceive this sort of style in 20 years. I can&#8217;t REALLY knock it but I can see how much energy it adds to these Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks films. I wonder where exactly this road leads. <\/p>\n<p>In contrast let&#8217;s look at a scene from Kiki&#8217;s Delivery Service. The poses range from 2 or 3 per line read. Sometimes the eyes stay completely static.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-CD9unyq7T8\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This gives breathing room for the audience to sit with and project their interpretations onto the character acting. The interaction between moving drawings and audience is deeper. Probably some of these differences come down to the limits of hand drawn technology and budget, but I&#8217;m wondering if there will be a movement in the 3D animation world to dial back poses and try to achieve these earlier vibes.  <\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, just to play devil&#8217;s advocate with myself here&#8217;s an old Donald Duck cartoon that is closer to the kinetic approach of Turning Red.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0DZJuSwh7XE\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So you could say modern blockbuster animation is mostly a natural extension of early animation fetishes and nothing I&#8217;m complaining about holds any water. It really comes down to me being a crank I suppose because I freaking love this Donald Duck cartoon.
