In fact I am currently recovering from Covid. Just now I heard my favorite pickled diakon company is closing their doors and I can feel my Japanese blood despairing deeply.<\/p>\n<p>What was there to enjoy this year? Well&#8230; despite my financial struggles I did have some success. I managed to pitch an idea to Cartoon Network that is being made into a short. That felt like the culmination of two years of concentrated hustle and missing out on job opportunities while trying to make my visions come to life. I hope y&#8217;all get to see it in the next 7 or 8 months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAVORITE MUSICIAN OF 2021<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> ZACH PHILLIPS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Zach Phillips entered my radar this year and I haven&#8217;t really listen to much outside of his catalog for the past several months.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5OgddZmH5Og\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d8ak8PRKeWs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cUECvdSD_y4\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WvqnY-FNDnM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His projects span a wide gamut of genres but throughout you get similar touchstones of complex piano runs, Bacharach-ian melodies, and a bit of dense cartoony Zappa-like arrangements or for deep music nerds: Zolo-like arrangements. He pumps out albums of what sounds like one mic recording a rehearsal and it really shows off the great playing of the collaborators he&#8217;s assembled. Zach Phillips is the man. I&#8217;ve been stalking him on Instagram because I&#8217;m such a big fan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BEST VIDEO GAME I PLAYED THIS YEAR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>NIER AUTOMATA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wJxNhJ8fjFk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Nothing that came out this year was better than this game.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nothing else really resonated with me this year. I re-watched 2001: Space Odyssey and that was fucking awesome as usual. The new Dune Movie looked cool but I&#8217;ve already mostly forgotten about it. I didn&#8217;t finish any books. I&#8217;ve been basically just surviving. I got my purple belt in jiu jitsu. That meant more to me than most anything else.<\/p>\n<p>I &#8216;m hoping this year really turns things around, but I&#8217;m not counting on it. The level of hate and bold pettiness in the world just seems to keep escalating.
