My first impulse was to call it the Jmoyns Deck, but that&#8217;s only because I&#8217;m so used to identifying myself with a nickname Tom Herpich gave me 8 years ago, which I turned into my Instagram handle. I guess I sign a lot of my drawings as Jmoyns but that&#8217;s only because I hate my signature.<\/p>\n<p>If any of you have ideas for a decent name for this deck please make a suggestion in the comments! Waite, Richard Roberts, Paul Foster Case, Manly P Hall, Yoav Ben-Dov, Aleister Crowley, Papus, Eliphas Levi, Valentin Tomberg, Paul Christian, Lon Milo DuQuette and an assortment of Google searches. None of the ideas present in this booklet originate from me, however they have been filtered and reassembled to help me make sense of\u00a0 the greatest storytelling device ever created.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The illustrations are a loose adaptation of the 18th century Camoin Marseille Tarot, although I was grabbing bits and pieces all the way back to the earliest hand-painted Italian decks up through the19th century occult revival decks.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I used the Marseille as my base-line reference because the Marseille is where I started. Alejandro Jodorowsky convinced me the Marseille represented the true spirit of the Tarot. I still use his deck for my readings. In order to deepen my understanding I decided to build my own deck. The theory is that by researching each image and then rendering them, I would begin to fully understand their mechanics. Sort of like building a car from scratch.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Through my research I found that Jodorowsky had taken some artistic and philosophical liberties with his deck in order to fill some visual gaps or elaborate on meanings. This made me realize that my journey of understanding would be non-linear. I could pull from the past and the future to better understand a deck from the late 1700\u2019s. Surprisingly the Rider Waite Smith deck became essential to unlocking some of the Marseille\u2019s opaqueness, despite my contempt for A.E Waite\u2019s pretentious self branding.
