Since then the meaning has changed, becoming much more of a meditation on the Universe of course! His posture is the inverse of the figure found in the World (XXI). 12 and 21 are also inversions of each other. His legs form a cross like the Emperor(4) and his torso forms a triangle like the Empress (3) but upside down. The inverted triangle is the alchemical symbol for water reflecting on what is above. The square (4) represents earth and the material plane. The Hanged man is in part a renunciation of the material world. He hangs by a thread tied by a cock \u2018n balls. This is a card of non-action and contemplation; a man caught between the polarities of receptive and active influences (the tree pillars whose stumps also number 12). His hands are resting in a passive position. The light of his mind shines down into the deep basement of his psyche. Perhaps this is the first stage of descent of Lucifer the Light Bringer, who makes his full reveal in XV. His torso is divided into the 4 Kabbalistic worlds and is decorated by the Tree of Life.
