I have a meeting with Netflix on November 4th to pitch my re-imagining of Smuggle Brothers. They sent me an email today about it asking for a logline to describe the show.\u00a0 In case you’re not familiar with the basics of pitching, people usually expect a logline to describe your show, book, movie, in one or two sentences. This is some kinda satanic industry protocol for selling a story. I get that loglines aren’t supposed to be taken too seriously, but it’s hard on the heart to distill an immense world of ideas into a dumb fart sound.<\/p>\n

The thing about this project I’m hoping to achieve is not forcing myself to understand it. The source of the material branches from the midlife crisis I’ve been experiencing for about 2 years. This is something I’m having a hard time understanding, so it would make sense that the material would then also be unformed. How then to describe it succinctly to a company that might want to fund and distribute it with confidence?\u00a0 I get some relief hearing the way David Lynch describes his films. For example he described Inland Empire as the story of “a woman in trouble”. That’s about as universal as possible, to the the point of meaning nothing. It’s basically a troll, and a warning to not ask him stupid questions like “what’s it about?”. I don’t have this luxury so much, but I am going to try and talk about these ideas in the meeting if I can.<\/p>\n

I wrote my logline on the toilet this morning:<\/p>\n

When dying is outlawed, two brothers travel the universe to smuggle beings into the afterlife. <\/em><\/p>\n
