Several years later and we’re still getting paid every once in a while to develop more Manly. Justin and I spent the last couple months expanding our initial mini-series idea into a 16 episode season outline for the streaming service VRV. We did several passes, and shaped it into something that I believe takes the original idea and drops it into some pretty deep waters. I was initially hesitant to take on such a workload just to have it streamed on an app that I wasn’t sure anyone was looking at, but it turns out a fair amount of people are watching VRV according to this article in Forbes from 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you’ve been following my blogs here since the beginning, you’ll know by now that none of this is a guarantee of anything. Usually it just amounts to a lot of waiting. But with fingers crossed, we wait to see if the VRV people give us the go-ahead to make a season of Manly.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile I’m back to storyboarding on Julia Pott’s show, Summer Camp Island. I’m also helping with art direction on Pen Ward and Duncan Trussel’s show they’re developing for Netflix. I’m trying to help make it look distinct from Adventure Time. I’m not sure if that’s the right idea, but I think it would be cool to help create a different visual language for a new Pen series, especially since AT spawned so many shows that ripped off its aesthetic. To make another Pen show that looked like AT would be like a creator ripping off people who ripped him off. I guess that’s the contrarian in me. I see show creators like Matt Groening, and Seth MacFarlane using the same design sensibilities for their multiple cartoon creations, which feels like brand expansion or something. It’s iterations of a single aesthetic which makes it easy for audiences to glide over to their new thing I suppose.\u00a0 That makes me wary of trying to make it too different looking from the thing everyone loves him for.<\/p>\n

I wonder how well Matt Groening’s new show is doing. I watched the first episode and it was boring, and kinda looked like ass. It has that cheap-looking Photoshop painting style to the backgrounds, like a high school art student trying to digitally recreate fantasy paintings, but not being quite good enough to do it. It mixes in cell shaded 3-D buildings which clashes with the 2D characters, and some really clunky storyboarding. If they’re going to pose out their action scenes so shitilly, they should just avoid action and stick to jokes. I liked the elf character well enough. I feel like the show should’ve just been about him, but I guess it’s hard to expect an animated show it hit its strong points right out of the gate on the first episode. I’m not gonna watch anymore though. I didn’t even watch the Simpsons or Futurama. I was just curious.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
