So, based on the feedback I got, I’ve decided to rework the images I’m not happy with, but still produce those discarded designs as bonus cards, separate to the official Major Arcana set. Hope that’s a good compromise for everyone!<\/p>\n

Since starting this project I’ve nearly doubled my research materials, and my process has become more visually organized. Here are my original notes for the Fool. <p><\/p>\n

Here are my new notes – combing deeper into Richard Roberts, Stuart Kaplan, Gertrude Moakley, Paul Foster Case, and Paul Huson:<\/p>\n

I wanted to be more explicit about the Fool’s nutsack, which appears in the earliest Marseille designed by Jean Noblet.<\/p>\n

I added a 7 part red feather as an homage to the earliest depictions of the Fool that were used to symbolize the 7 weeks of Lent, after which the Fool would be sacrificed as a symbol of the cycle of life and death (to say the least). The donkey’s ears are also a callback to the earliest Tarot depictions, as they fit well with the idea of foolishness, mockery, journeying, sacrifice and resurrection (Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem).<\/p>\n

I gave the Fool breasts in support of Paul Foster Case’s case for androgyny (see notes). The Fool’s garment is held closed by a belt made of 4 bells and 3 sections. 4 elements, 4 Qabalistic worlds, 4 suits, 4 beasts, 4 cardinal directions etc… aka the world of creation. 3+4=7 the heavenly bodies as known by the ancient mystics. To remove this belt is to remove the illusion, so beneath is the abyss which is depicted explicitly in the Death card.<\/p>\n

I therefore modeled the new composition to mirror the Death card; emphasizing their close relationship, which is also implied in the Rider Waite (see Richard Roberts notes). I need to have the Fool leaning a little bit more forward but you get the idea I hope. The Fools walking stick reaches below into the “alchemical nigredo” as Roberts puts it.<\/p>\n

On the wallet I’ve put the seal of the All Seeing Eye as a measure of protection against the uninitiated from viewing what Rudolph Steiner called the Akashic records, or universal memory. Of this , the Fool is blissfully unaware, but they carry it with them regardless.<\/p>\n
