I saw a handful of pretty good stuff, a bunch of stuff that didn&#8217;t do much for me, and a small handful of steaming garbage.<\/p>\n<p>Here was my favorite one:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1XLSMyWUx78\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Not in terms of ambition, but in that there was a loose narrative I could track, it was constantly inventive, the drawings were cool, and it seemed to know what it was trying to do. <\/p>\n<p>So much of the experimental animation world reminds me of the DIY zine world: 75% of people making zines are killing trees for no good reason. They aren&#8217;t trying hard enough, their ideas are half baked and they should cut it out until they decide to actually make something with a little bit more rigor. <\/p>\n<p>I feel like many of these animators come up with a series of scenes that they&#8217;d like to bring to life, but they don&#8217;t really consider if anyone would enjoy watching it. And then since everyone else in the audience is an animator, it&#8217;s like a &#8220;I&#8217;ll scratch your back if you scratch mine&#8221; sense of empowerment to also create selfish works of screen time as long as he opportunity is there. So it&#8217;s a largely closed loop circle jerk of half conceived work. There&#8217;s almost no threat of being called out on making boring shit. <\/p>\n<p>This is coming from someone who feels at home somewhere between traditional and experimental storytelling. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just got back from a 3 day animation festival in Berkeley.
