I like to compare their mannerisms to see how their inflections and word choices intersect with each other. One thing someone pointed out to me, is how Youtubers across the board have learned to address themselves as “We” rather than “I” most of the time, which sort of fucks me up a little.

Anyway, if you want: watch this video and see how many times he uses the words “content”, “IP” and “experience”. It’s the kind of language that I find really divorced from an interest in art. If I were to make a wild guess, I’d say this is a trickle down effect from corporate and game engineering speak into the modern world of big brand-loyal nerds.

I bring this topic up because of my interesting foray into the world of VR at Cartoon Network. I was hired for 4 weeks to help jumpstart their VR program using VR native software: so basically bringing a story to life using cutting edge shit I never used before.

In preparing for this job, my co-workers and I watched hours of programmers talking about “user experience”, “IP” and “Content”. These framing devices are super contagious it turns out, and I found myself adopting them quickly during our brainstorm sessions. As a group we had to actively address corporate programmer language and check ourselves to not fall into that trap so easily. Just using that sort of language can mold your brain into a box of what is possible with the VR medium (or in any medium really). It really fucks with your head! It makes you wonder where we are headed when young people starting saying shit like “core completed experience” to express their desires.

Okay so that was a major concern in our development of this Cartoon Network IP haha. So we had 4 weeks to make a story and design everything for it to possibly ship to a game developer to polish up. In the thing we made, you are a dimension hopper who befriends a caterpillar who wants to be pen-pals with an alternate reality version of her. There’s a cosmic deity who advises you and there are lots of jokes about bird doo-doo and reiki massage lessons.

We designed almost everything with VR headsets on and sculpting in that space using Google Blocks, Oculus Medium and a little bit of Photoshop. CN hooked us up with super powerful machines and both Oculus Rifts and HTC Vives.

The name of the thing we did is called “Kosmo Kwest: Portal 1: The Beginninning”

I’m pretty sure no one will ever see it. It was fun to make though. I can’t think of anything else to say about it, but if you have more questions, ask me below and I’ll try to give good answers.

I’ve been fascinated by Youtube game reviewers for a while.
