As I assembled my notes and started sketching out some ideas, I hit on a few lingering questions regarding the dew drops, the rays of the reflected sun and the design\/color of the crab.<\/p>\n

One of my online friends suggested that the dew drops were 22 in number (the number of the major trumps as well as the Hebrew alphabet) and intended to represent the letter Yod, which implies (sometimes) the Hermit (Key 9) as a reduction of 1 and 8. For me, Hebrew alphabet correlations are extremely problematic as no major occultist seems to be able to agree on placement. From Crowley to Waite, to Papus, to Levi, to Case, to Hall and so on… they all have slight to major differences in the way they line up the Tarot with the Hebrew alphabet. So I basically ignore this aspect of thinking about the cards. I also don’t think this was a specific intention behind the oldest decks. However, were 17th century Tarot card makers aware of Kabbalistic ideas and possibly incorporating them into their images? It seems possible, since it was around this era that we had the emergence of Athanasius Kircher and Robert Fludd who both pushed Jewish mysticism to the forefront of their cosmological investigations.<\/p>\n

I was looking into the meaning behind the number of rays emanating from the Moon (32) which correlates to the number of paths and emanations in the Sephiroth (10+22). The rays add up this way in the Jodo Marseille, the Ben-Dov Marseille and the Rider Waite. Where they are sourcing this number from I’m not sure.<\/p>\n

It’s possible they’re basing it on the Nicholas Conver Tarot design (18th century), which was an easier deck to get a hold of back in the day, from what I understand:<\/p>\n

The earlier Jean Noblet version (mid 17th century) has a rando 27 rays.<\/p>\n

But here we have an illustration of the Sun by Robert Fludd from “the History of the Two Worlds” published in 1617 with 32 rays, implying his interest in Kabbalistic numerology so….<\/p>\n

Then I also did some re-tooling of the crab to make is seem more nightmarish and monstrous. I’m still debating on its color scheme and how important it is to match its colors with the moon as in the Noblet and Jodorowsky Marseille or to go for the more subconscious blue color scheme of the Ben-Dov version. From a design and meaning standpoint, I’m still debating this.<\/p>\n
