The Star being the card following The Tower, (in which the Devil breaks its chains and is redeemed through revelation) has a logical connection to the mythology of the Morning Star, aka the Light Bringer, aka Lucifer before his fall from Heaven. Whether that was intended in the old printmaker’s mind is unknown, but what’s great about the Tarot is that no meaning is fixed. Other possible origins of this card are worth diving into, such as the star of Bethlehem, and also the gnostic notion of the Ogdoad who presides over the seven celestial bodies.<\/p>\n

In the Marseille version, the great star is 16 pointed divided in halves, which indicate a merging of masculine and feminine, which to me is a reference to the old alchemical notion of the Sun (XVIIII), Moon (XVIII) and Star (XVII).\u00a0 See my Richard Roberts notes above.<\/p>\n

The mixing of active and receptive fluids harks back to Temperance, except this time she’s pouring it out onto the land and sea. There’s a theme of groundedness here; of the highest world influencing the lowest world in order to nourish it.<\/p>\n

The black dots inside the 7 smaller stars are an invention of Jodorowsky, but I like it a lot as a compromise to understanding the 7 stars as the 7 Heavenly bodies or “planetary archons” as Roberts puts it. It’s funny how I started with Jodorowsky’s deck, hoping it would be the most authentic Marseille, but the more I read about these cards, the more I realize how much artistic license he used to make his version! Sly guy.<\/p>\n

The woman’s body resembling a swastika is maybe a bit far fetched, although if that’s what you see, then that’s what you see. The pre-nazi, Hindu notion of it’s meaning certainly ties to the themes of the card, so if that reinforces your understanding then cool.<\/p>\n
