When we look at a picture of a person driving a car, we expect their body to be sitting in a seat, with foot on the gas and hand on the wheel.

On first glance, the card is a man standing in a chariot, being pulled by two sphinxes. On closer examination, the reality breaks down and we see a man encased in a square, being pulled nowhere. I wasn’t able to see the image for what it really was until someone explained it to me in a book. The instinct to normalize the image was so strong that I couldn’t actually see the true image.

This happens with many of the images in the Tarot as well as images in daily life. I believe there’s a compulsion to normalize the occasions of dissonance, and amplified realities that we are exposed to. For example walking down a familiar street your whole life without understanding what is there: in my girlfriend’s neighborhood there’s a occult (BOTA) temple we walk by all the time on the way to breakfast. If I hadn’t pointed it out to her, it never would have registered as even a place that contained history. It even took me a while to recognize what it was, while knowing who the BOTA are! I was simply too focused on getting pancakes!

I’m reminded of the door sign calling for madmen only, sitting plainly on the street in Hermann Hesse’s “Steppenwolf”. I’m also reminded of the story my friend Brandon told me of when he visited Venice Beach as a kid and was called into an alley by an upset looking man, who seemed to levitate in front of him while asking for help.

I made a second appearance on the Duncan Trussell Family Hour.
