An illustrator named Paul du Coudray gave me a copy of “Meditations on the Tarot”, which was written by an anonymous Christian priest. In his section on the Fool, he compared what he calls “pure induction” vs analogy.

Now “pure induction” is founded on simple enumeration and is essentially only conclusion based on the experience of given statistics. Thus one could say: “As John is a man and is dead, and as Peter is a man and is dead, and as Michael is a man and is dead, therefore man is mortal.” The force of this argument depends on the number or on the quantity of facts known through experience. The method of analogy, on the other hand, adds the qualitive element, i.e. that which is of intrinsic importance, to the quantitative. Here is an example of an argument by analogy: “Andrew is formed from matter, energy and consciousness. As matter does not disappear with his death, but only changes its form, and as energy does not disappear but only modifies the mode of its activity, Andrew’s consciousness, also, cannot simply disappear, but must merely change its form and mode (or plane) of activity. Therefore Andrew is immortal. – page 16 Meditations on the Tarot

The reason this card traditionally has no name is because the word “death” is misleading. The more I look into this card, the less it becomes about corporeal death, and more about the forgetting or letting go of those things that keep us trapped in the turmoil of the external world. Recent political events are a prime example of how a nation of people can express their inner ruin as a result of material events: a perfect example of Rajas leaning toward Tamas aka passion leading towards chaos and non-mastery of self. Anyway I’m getting off track. Here are my notes.

The Fool and Death seem to be inversions of each other. It could possibly sway me to include some of the imagery in the card. Right now I’m feeling like it’s too much and confuses my understanding of the intention of the card.

The black hole and space replacing the black garden is just meant to illuminate the idea of the Eternal Return – that all things move in cycles of death and rebirth and that for me, the void is my ultimate fear and final challenge: the resonating image that appeared to me in my ayahuasca trip. Here’s some additional examples of death cards from the 15th century that I found in Stuart Kaplan’s Tarot Encyclopedia.

Wasn’t sure what I was gonna dig up with this card.
