Even though I’ve been off the show since July 2015, this news came as a weird relief for me. I told Ako this and she laughed and asked why. I couldn’t really give a clear answer. I didn’t know exactly.

It probably has something to do with my level of emotional attachment to the show while working on it, and how it dominated my state of mind for 5 years. A few months after leaving, I pretty much stopped following it and stopped looking at responses to it. This was a process I felt like I needed to go through in order to get my creative energy back and clear my mind of any mental junk left over from the intensity of working on AT.

Even now, while embarking on new episodes of Manly and a pilot for CN, I find it emotionally difficult to sit down and storyboard. I don’t have quite the endurance and speed I had before: that coke-head-like ability to bulldoze through 50 pages of boards in two days. I much prefer to bust out 3 pages in a sitting and then go hang out with my girlfriend at a hot spring :-)!

As the months go by, I’ve started to slowly recoup my energy and I’m able to spend more hours in the mental state required for boarding. Meanwhile all this time, the continuing production of Adventure Time has hung subtly over my shoulder; like a whispering ghost of a story I decided to bail on. If the show had continued forever, I believe it would’ve affected me forever. Knowing there’s an end coming, lifted the weight I was dragging and created a sense of optimism about what my friends still working there will decide to do with their creative careers in the future. I believe a lot of latent ideas will be fully incubated and ready to hatch.

A few days ago I had coffee with my former AT board partner Ako Castuera and she dropped the deets that Adventure Time production would end with Season 9.
