I don’t think his drawings are very good, or appealing in any way. But Tom kept recommending Fleep to me, so I read it and became a fan. Fleep and Book Hunter are crazy entertaining, funny, and smart as hell, which proves you can have shit drawing skills and still make a comic I’d want to read. Conversely, there are people with amazing drawing chops who can’t write for shit and I will never read their comics.

I’m about 160 pages into Demon and it’s just as good as his previous work. I CANNOT BELIEVE the pace he’s working at. HE’S DOING A PAGE EVERY DAY. This guy is a maniac. Check it out HERE. And support his Patreon if you can! He has a kid to support!

FAVORITE COMIC OF 2015: TERROR ASSAULTER by BENJAMIN MARRA

Of the Marra books that I’ve read, this is his best, and it’s my favorite comic of the year. He sticks to the super redundancy of characters explaining everything they’re doing and absolutely nothing beyond that. “I am kicking you” while kicking someone through the head. The cumulative effect is a feeling of being beaten or punished as you push onward through the relentless violence and redundant dialogue. My body reacts to this punishment by laughing harder and harder as the book goes on.

I always enjoy Marra’s stiff drawings and sometimes jarring proportions. It give his panels a certain power that I can’t totally explain. And I really dig the “I’ll fuck or kill anything that moves” characterization of the main character. It’s an interesting satire of 80’s action movie masculinity, while still celebrating the thrills we get from following those kinds of opaque, sociopathic characters.

FAVORITE GENRE TV EPISODE OF THE YEAR: DOCTOR WHO – HEAVEN SENT

I pretty much only watch genre television: Sci-fi, super hero shit, Game of Thrones and then I’ll pepper it with comedy stuff while I’m eating dinner. But the only shows I feel passionate about keeping up with are those genre stories. Ok yeah I like Louie too. Is it even a comedy anymore?

Anyway in a year of pretty good genre TV, the season 9 Doctor Who episode “Heaven Sent” helped me believe in this show again. The whole season was gangbusters (except for that eye booger episode wtf) which I didn’t think was possible after 3 seasons of mostly rubbish, hollow grandstanding. “Heaven Sent” is somewhere in the top 5-ish episodes of the modern series for me. It takes the Doctor to the absolute extreme of problem solving, emotion, and sacrifice. It really is a masterpiece of emotional storytelling.

FAVORITE NEW MUSIC OF THE YEAR

It’s hard to care about new music when at any given moment you can put on King Crimson’s “Larks’ Tongues in Aspic” and then everything else sounds like shit. But here’s a new jam I enjoyed this year:

Thundercat songs all sort of blend together but if you listen to one at a time, they are great. He sounds like a funky Robert Wyatt to me sometimes. I appreciate this dude can seem hip and shred like a nerd at the same time. Also he plays bass in Suicidal Tendencies which I think is pretty cool, considering no one has given a fuck about Suicidal Tendencies since they were on Beavis and Butthead in the early 90’s…

On a related note, when I was traveling across the country this year, my friend Damon put on some proggy Flying Lotus album that I thought was pretty satisfying. He also played me a lot of Drake and Kendrick Lamar and I wasn’t so into that.

MUSIC THAT HELPED ME WRITE AND DRAW IN 2015

Glenn Branca really did it for me in 2015. I got through Season 7 of Adventure Time on Glenn Branca’s symphonies 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and The World Upside Down. Powerful stuff with great texture, drama, rhythm and space. Gets me right into the correct zone… feeling like an unstoppable creator.

FAVORITE COMEDIAN ON A PODCAST

I don’t think I can put into words what Horatio Sanz does that makes me laugh so hard. It’s sort of like he’s not trying, and somehow stumbling into the funniest shit. This is from 2016 but he’s been cracking me up all year.

FAVORITE BOOK I READ THIS YEAR

This is embarrassing but I read Siddhartha this year. I tried reading it in my early 20’s but thought it was super pretentious and put it down quickly. I read it this year and was deeply affected by it! It must be because I’m old now and can better relate to the idea of being a guy who ferries people across a river all day! Don’t look down on me for reading Siddhartha in my late 30’s fuck you!

I’m also in the middle of reading “Zero: The Biography of A Dangerous Idea” which is about the history of the number zero and relates to my interest in the days when the motivation of science and math was to prove the existence of the Divine. I’m still reading Hermann Hesse’s collection of essays… and a shit ton of books about the Tarot.

COMIC ARTIST/ILLUSTRATOR WHO STOOD OUT TO ME IN 2015

Jesse Balmer has been killing it on his Instagram this year.

www/instagram.com/worstbreakfast

FAVORITE MOVIE 2015

I missed a bunch of the “must see” films of 2015, so I don’t feel qualified to post about this. I really enjoyed Mad Max though, despite this scene:

Which was only slightly better than this scene:

I feel like they should ban these kinds of moments from movies.
