Last night and today I tried to get inspired to redesign the clothing of the two women characters. I wrote to my friend Kris Chau (who is a great LA illustrator and clothing designer. Check out here stuff HERE<\/a>) asking where I could look to find some ideas and she pointed me to the 2015 Fall Valentino collection. So I spent a while just copying clothing designs from the Valentino collection:<\/p>\n

I don’t know where I’m gonna go with this exactly but it definitely is pumping some imagination muscles in my heart. <\/p>\n

I posted some of these fashion images on my Instagram last night because I was bored and going crazy. But I didn’t explain what the drawings were intended for. Anyway I hope y’all don’t mind I occasionally leak partial images from the Temple into my Instagram feed. I have a slight problem where if I get bored enough, and haven’t talked to anyone all day, I try to find images to post on my Instagram feed. I’m gonna try to be more disciplined about maintaining clear lines between my Temple\/Lodge stuff and what people see in my Instagram stuff. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile I did some investigating into the origins of Eros\/Cupid and how A.E. Waite made the connection to Archangel Raphael. My readings of Waite and Paul Foster Case left this lingering question of how these mythical beings were connected, since neither of them seemed obliged to explain the thought process. Thank God for the Internet. <\/p>\n

So digging around a bit I found a passage from Anthony Louis’ book “Tarot Beyond the Basics” explaining how Archangel Raphael in Catholicism was a Christianized stand-in for Eros\/Cupid. Louis states that Waite was a Catholic, but I’m not sure that he remained Catholic all his life. Anyway here are my notes on that, as well as a rough sketch of the Lover card:<\/p>\n

What really excited me about all this, was the potential of crossing this project into my Forming work. Sort of like how the Beatles refer to songs within songs. My Lover Tarot research was overlapping with my Forming research and design of Archangels. Cupid and Raphael are interchangeable and recently I’d tracked Noah’s encounter with Archangel Raphael. Not only that, but intuitively I’d designed Raphael with a heart nose<\/em> pointing into his\/her third eye while their material eyes remained closed. Not only that, but Aleister Crowley’s thoughts on the Lovers card reinforce my design decision:<\/p>\n

“…each of these symbols is in itself a double, so that the meanings for a divergent series, and the integration of the card can only be regained by repeated marriages, identifications, and some form of Hermaphroditism.” <\/p>\n

My only concern in using this image, is how far it is from recognizable images of either Cupid or Raphael. But then again, an uneducated glance at Waite-Smith’s image of the Archangel doesn’t draw a direct line to that specific angel. I put a bow and arrow in his hand to make the Eros connection clear. I also imply the alchemical gesture of Dissolve and Coagulate in his body language to further the message of union. Thinking about also incorporating the star of David (present in the Hall-Knapp version) within the white Sun but that might simply be redundant considering Raphael himself is the marriage of male and female aspects anyway. <\/p>\n

Are y’all following this clearly enough or should I be more thorough in my presentation of terms? For example, “I also imply the alchemical gesture of Dissolve and Coagulate in his body language to further the message of union.” Is that enough or should I be explaining more?
