Since I’m waiting around for my art supplies to arrive here in Angouleme (hopefully by Monday) I’m spending the day re-reading and taking thorough notes on the Joseph Campbell\/Richard Roberts Tarot book. Specifically Richard Robert’s section.<\/p>\n

I highly recommend this book (and its silly cover) as a key to illuminating A.E. Waite’s intentions with his deck. You can’t really start with Richard Roberts, as he jumps you into a whirlpool of dense and personal numerological, Jungian and Golden Dawn esoteric business, in a completely disorganized fashion. But after spending time with other streamlined authors, as well as AE Waite’s frustratingly opaque commentaries, all of a sudden Tarot Revelations becomes super useful. <\/p>\n

Also because I was a little bored, I assembled this preliminary Sephiroth tree based on the diagram in Manly P Hall’s book and Crowley’s Tarot overlay. Some of Crowley’s placement doesn’t quite make sense to me, but I haven’t had a chance to cross reference with other Tarot\/Sephiroth charts just yet. <\/p>\n

Also there seems to be a lot of discrepancy with the Hebrew spellings. Anyway. Sometimes I need a handy visual reference for ways of relating Tarot imagery to the emanations of Ain Soph you know??<\/p>\n

Meanwhile I’m starting to get that good feeling I was hoping for – like I’m some sort of Mister Norrell, hiding away from the world, prioritizing research over practical application. <\/p>\n

If you haven’t seen Jonathan Strange and Mister Norrell, I highly recommend it! Such a wonderful characterization of a fearful wizard book nerd by Eddie Marsan. It’s a nice spin on wizards that I’ve never seen before. It makes sense that we haven’t seen it, because the idea that mastery of art actually takes TIME is unromantic (in fiction and in life) and in theory makes for bad entertainment. You can show the great wizard library, but a movie of them just researching for years would most likely be pretty shitty! Which is why you needed Jonathan Strange to balance out the show dynamic. Regardless I was excited to see the dry, antisocial, book nerd wizard get some representation on TV. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
