<\/a><\/p>\nI have to get up the courage to go check out this Jiu Jitsu school that’s about a mile from where I’m staying. I hope someone speaks English there. After I quit Adventure Time I lost about 15lbs, just from not being exposed to cakes, cereal, donuts and bagels every freaking day. I’m trying to not get doughy again while I’m out here.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile someone asked about some details of the residency. The building I’m in is called Les Maison Des Auteurs. It was founded in 2002 by P\u00f4le Image – Magelis, which from my understanding is some sort of foundation that supports comics, animation, filming and video games.<\/p>\n
People can keep a residency going here for years apparently. I think Jessica Abel is doing a 4 year residency. My temporary roommate Pedro is doing a year long residency.<\/p>\n
I’ve been reading a book of essays by Hermann Hesse. Here’s an excerpt from the essay “A Bit of Theology” from 1932 comparing reason and piety: The man of reason believes he possesses within himself the “meaning” of the world and of his life. He projects the semblance of order and efficiency of a well-organized individual into the world and history. Therefore he believes in progress. He sees that the men of today can shoot better and travel faster than those of earlier times, and he will not and dare not see that opposed to these advances there are a thousand regressions. He believes the man of today to be a higher evolvement than Confucius, Socrates, or Jesus because the man of today has developed certain technical capabilities to a higher degree. The man of reason believes that the earth was given to men for exploitation. His most feared enemy is death. He avoids thinking about the transience of his life and activity and when he cannot avoid the idea of death he opposes death with a redoubled energy and seeks refuge in acquisitive activity; for possessions, for knowledge, for laws, for a rational mastery of the world. His belief in immortality is faith in that progress; because he is an active link in the eternal chain of progress he believes that he is fully protected against annihilation.
