I could totally change my mind about that later I don’t know. Also there’s the archetypal/magickal feminine aspects of Monday, which doesn’t imply gender. Anyway with the title having the word “brothers” in it, and nothing implying the existence of women, the whole thing feels like Jachin without the Boaz you know what I’m sayin’? Unbalanced!

So why not turn Caspar Brickhouse Fightgenius into a girl? I just watched a Ronda Rousey fight the other day which inspired me. Also it’s not like muscle bound females are outside of my wheelhouse. In fact, they seem to be a favorite thematic device I’ve been using for years. Why? I don’t know. Who cares?

Also this new design looks way better in my opinion.

Pro-Tip when pitching: The thing that seems to be the most important is describing the character personalities, what their relationship is to each other, and “what they want”. I think all this stuff I’ve developed could totally be non-existent if I just walked in the room with these few details about the characters. But me being me, this is usually the last thing I work out. Why is that? Because I believe this method of figuring out a show is fundamentally wrong.

In a recent WTF interview with Pulitzer Prize winning playwrite Annie Baker (episode 645), she describes this idea of writing for characters, where it feels most real when they contradict themselves, and don’t know what they want. Nobody in the world knows what they want. To tie your characters down to these constraints is to limit their humanity and reduce them to caricatures. I found her thoughts on this subject really inspiring (and validating, considering this was the method of character writing I was attempting on Adventure Time). The best way to create a tapestry of what a character wants is to deeply care about them, and put them in scenarios where discovery can happen. Then a vague idea of what they want slowly emerges. Stepping forward and back.

That said, I understand (although I disagree) why this system is in place. So I’m willing to follow these prerequisites as best I can.

It’s been in the back of my mind that this Smuggle Brothers pitch right now is comprised of all male-ish characters, with the possible exception of the Pilot, since its sex is not determined, but in my mind it feels male.
